If you only want to light from the top then fine. But also usual problem with general LED lights they often have poor CRI (color rendition index or spectral quality). If they look harsh or you can't get good skintones, they might be the problem. Btw old incandescent lightbulbs have like perfect white light.
For playing with contrast and lights, it's best to have something like a ringlight, you can move around easily and adjust it.
And for colored lights, there's plenty of RGB options - but don't expect a good white light out of these. It's only for fancy colors, it doesn't replace a good white light. Usual RGB tape with a controller is probably cheapest option and you can put it around you as needed. That's what I use for my pics, like here: RGB tape set to yellow/orange around me, another one from above set to violet and a bit of warm fill ringlight from the front.

There are several steps:

There's plenty to learn but it's really help to see yourself while adjusting lights etc. on a screen. If you are using just your phone, you can cast the screen to your TV (or buy cheap chromecast dongle you can plug in your PC monitor). Seeing changes in lighting in realtime will help your learn what does what by simply going for what looks better at a first glance...
